After the invasion of the tatars in 1241, Sibiu was fortified between the 13th and 16th century, during four stages, with massive walls made from red bricks. This brought the name of The Red Fortress for the city of Sibiu. The walls stretched across 4 km, being provided with 39 defence towers and 5 bastions. Today you can still see the Soldisch bastion and the Haller bastion, alongside the towers of The Stairs, The Council, The Carpenters, The Gunsmiths, The Pottery, The Archbishops, The Skinners, The Powder Tower and The Thick Tower.<\/div>\n

The Brukenthal National Museum<\/em><\/h3>\n

The Council Tower<\/em><\/h3>\n

The most important landmark in Sibiu, Turnul Sfatului (Hermannst\u00e4dter Ratsturm in German) was built in the 13th century above the entrance of the second fortification belt of the city, between the Small Square and the Big Square, next to the City Council, hence its name. In 1886, the first clock was added, made by master craftmans from Sighi\u0219oara, with a wooden mechanism. In 1906 it was replaced with a modern version, equipped with a steel mechanism and enlightment during the night, bringing also the name of The Clock Tower. Throughout the history it was gate tower, granary, observation center, fire observation point, prison, upon entering the modern era it served for exhibitional purposes, hosting art displays, exhibitions and was even a natural science museum in the 19th century. Currently, one of the most beautiful points of belvedere in Sibiu.

Thalia Hall was built in 1787 by Martin Hochmeister, the initiator of the first bookstore in the country, the construction is a real architectural gem, having two balconies and a lodge for the governor of Transylvania.
